So my story kind of begins in 2009. But Own Something Awesome really originated in August of 2011. In fall of 2009 I already had left my position as an Insurance Agent, and was trying to build my business to full-time income. (Or let’s be honest, even part-time income and I would have been ecstatic.)

While attending almost every virtual lav that was offered, a topic that came up quite often was shop names. You wanted a name that was easy for your customer to remember.I was OOAK by A.D.Designs. Once you have found the show you would like to attend, it is now time to apply.
I like to make a copy of every contract to keep on file and refer back to. This is especially helpful when tailoring your selection of products for the type of show you will be attending. (You don’t want to forget what products you said you would bring.)
Note: Some shows do require you to have a sales tax license. Make sure to look up the information for your state on how to acquire one.

When I first started my Blog, I used it to share the stories of other Etsy sellers. I love handmade products, the talent that goes into them and the stories behind the business. I realized I’ve never REALLY told my story for my business though. Over the next couple of weeks I want to share my story with you so that you can get to know me a little more. I’m going to cover the topics of why I named my business Own Something Awesome, how I came to sell what I do now (there’s been a long road to come to this point), what I have planned for the future, and any questions my readers may have. When you start to find shows in your area, or where you’re willing to travel to, you will notice there are different types of shows. You will find non-juried, juried, gift shopping/holiday, and art shows.
There could be more, but these are generally the kind you will come across.
Now, you’re probably wondering what the difference is, so let’s go over them.

When looking for a craft show, you will want to find the right show for you. For example, if you’re selling high-end, higher-priced pieces, you may not do very good at your local high school bazaar. (But if you do, props to you!) You will also want to do some research after finding a show before signing up for it. Let’s start with finding a show though.
There are many options out there for organizers to advertise their upcoming shows. You could start by looking in your local newspaper or watch for signs advertising a show. If you attend a show, you could also ask for the event organizer to send you the information for future shows they have planned.
Local newspaper, signs around town, Facebook, Google, Craigslist, attending a show as a guest, talking to other vendors at a show you’re at – these are so many different ways to find a show.
