Feature Friday – vintagepoetic & Coupon Code!

Well it’s Friday again, and my week has been absolutely crazy. I think I need a vacation 🙂  ha! But, before we all start our weekends, why not check out this week’s Featured Seller! Helen from vintagepoetic

1) How did you start collecting?

I started collecting and became interested in vintage items from a very early age, when my grandmother would take me along with her to yard sales. I started to sell vintage in 1998, shortly after the birth of my first son. I started on eBay, then started a flea market booth with a friend. Currently my items are exclusively available through Etsy.
2) What is your favorite thing about collecting?
The thing I love most about vintage is the thrill of the hunt, the sense of discovery when you come across that unique item you’ve never seen before.
3) Where do you find your inspiration?
I am inspired by the craftsmanship I find in vintage items, how well they were put together and forged. I love watching old movies and flipping through older magazines, looking at the table settings in ads to see how the dishes I sell were used and marketed when they were brand new.
4) Tell us about what you sell.
The large part of my store are housewares, specifically tableware, glassware and china. I do however also have a soft spot for old vinyl records and books, as well as vintage clothing, although most of that I keep for myself!
5) How did your shop get it’s name?
Around the time I opened my Etsy store, my first book of poetry was published by Little Red Tree Press. Initially I had thought that I might have a vintage/handcraft store, making murals featuring lines from some of my original poetry. However I soon discovered I really didn’t have the time to currently focus on both, but that was how the store got its name, and it has stuck. I hope to at some point in the future begin to create again, and open a second store for handcrafted items.
6) Do you have any advice for other sellers?
Don’t get ahead of yourself, make time for Etsy, but also for the rest of your life. You can get overwhelmed quite easily, checking your stats constantly, joining more and more teams, and that can take away from your creative time or, in my case, picking time.
7) How do you balance your Etsy shop, your children, and your everyday schedule?
I try to have set times for each, It helps that my children are now at school, although my daughter, who goes to preschool in the afternoons, loves to go thrifting with me in the morning. She’s developing quite a good eye, and it helps having someone at eye level with those bottom shelves! I love it because it reminds me of how much fun I had at her age with my grandmother, finding hidden treasures at yard sales and flea markets. In many ways I feel as if I’m passing on a family tradition of thrift and of discovering the beauty in everyday things.
8) Where else can we find you?
I have a vintagepoetic blog on WordPress, where I talk about my adventures in picking as well as dig a little deeper on the history of some of the items in my shop. I’m also on Twitter.

And as a special bonus for the readers here she left us a coupon code to use!
