Whether you’re looking for a flower hair clip, or a bag to carry all your thing in – be sure to check out this week’s Featured Seller, Melanie from Mulberry Junction!
1) How did you start creating?
I watched my mom, who was a seamstress and very resourceful. She inspired me to create and encouraged me when I wanted to explore different mediums.
2) What is your favorite thing about creating?
I love the thrill of holding up that finished product and smiling at it. It’s knowing I’ve made something I think is beautiful or wonderful that brings that thrill. Sharing what I’ve created also brings fantastic satisfaction. Nothing greater than when somebody asks, “Did you make this?”
3) Where do you find your inspiration?
Inspiration is everywhere. I find it in every part of my life. My children inspire a certain amount of creativity, because I think of things they would like and then I want to create them.
4) Tell us about what you sell.
My mom and I sew tote bags, cosmetic bags, pillows and more for my shop, Mulberry Junction. I embroider on some items and create handcrafted flowers and such things for others.
5) How did your shop get it’s name?
I love this question, because I love its answer. In the past we have volunteered at a local historical park where the kids and I dress up as pioneers and demonstrate what life was like in pioneer times. There is a mulberry tree across from the schoolhouse where my children love to pick the mulberries when they are ripe. I learned that the early pioneer women in Utah brought silkworms, that needed the mulberry trees for food. They cultivated the silk and spun it. Intrigued by their willingness to try anything creative I chose to name my shop after that tree. I love the challenge of making something from a medium I’ve never used.
6) Do you have any advice for other sellers?
Keep learning. I think its easy to get discouraged and think you can’t be successful on Etsy. But the more you learn and keep working, the more likely you are to have some success. The other thing I would say is to enjoy the journey.
7) How do you balance your Etsy shop, your children, and your everyday schedule?
I try to remember that my family is the most important. I do Etsy so I can be with them when they need me. I try to prioritize whats most important each day and try not to get discouraged when it doesn’t all get done. But I’m always on the lookout for pockets of time where I can work on a projects or listing or promoting my shop.
