Do you have a baby shower coming up and you’re just not sure what to buy? Or even a birthday party? If so, be sure to check out this week’s Featured Seller!
When she’s not spending time with her almost 18-month-old daughter, two grey kitty cats, and helpful husband, she is working on her Etsy shop. Meet Catherine from eLeMeNt-O-P!
1) How did you start creating?
As long as I can remember I always asked for crafting supplies for presents. I don’t know what got me started, but I started scrapbooking in sixth grade. It was for my Girl Scout Re dedication and Bridging Ceremony. I love to look at it and see how far I’ve come.
2) What is your favorite thing about creating?
It is so hard to narrow it down into words. I love seeing the progression of materials into a final product. I love putting into tangible terms what I see in my mind. I love being able to save money by creating custom pieces for my home and family that, hopefully, will be around for future generations.
3) Where do you find your inspiration?
Most of the time inspiration comes from my childhood. My parents were always very supportive of my endeavors. My dad had a science background and would talk to me about all kinds of chemistry, physics, and space-related topics. I took a lot of interest in chemistry and earned a degree in Chemistry and Food Science from Virginia Tech. I love to create things that will help inspire the next generation of scientists.
4) Tell us about what you sell.
I got to the age where I was being invited to baby showers and had no clue what a mom would need. I was working on some class work and looked up at my Periodic Table of Elements poster to help with a question and it came to me! I could create a periodic table element especially for my friend’s child – based on their birth information. It was a customized gift that they wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. And I would be able to work out my desires to create some art while taking a chemistry and math-filled course load. It has turned out to be a great new baby, graduation, and birthday gift!
5) How did your shop get it’s name?
I love my shop’s name. You can read about how I got the name on my blog: elementop.blogspot.com/2012/11/whats-in-name.html
6) Do you have any advice for other sellers?
Try to keep to a schedule. Do something each day, but don’t overwhelm yourself doing everything on one day. For instance, one day try to write some blog posts, another do some marketing, another check out teams, and make sure to spend time creating new products.
7) How do you balance your Etsy shop, your children, and your everyday schedule?
I worked 80+ hours a week at my previous job, so I’m used to trying to stay busy and get everything done. Some days are harder than others though. I’m very lucky that my daughter is a great sleeper and I have a lot of time to get housework, cooking, and errands done during the day. I write a to-do list almost every night for the next day. I have enough energy to take care of things, but not enough to remember what it is that I’m supposed to do.
